The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying,
Thus you shall bless the Israelites: You shall say to them, The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. So they shall put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them. - Numbers 6:22-26 |

Overview of Numbers
The book of Numbers contains a lot of numbers, lists, and detailed commands. But this book also tells of a desert adventure with God's people. It tells a sad story of the Israelites' refusal to trust God.
After God freed the Israelites from slavery, God led them into the desert between Egypt and Israel, the land God had promised to give Abraham. God planned to teach and train them to follow God. When Moses sent spies to check out the land they had been promised, the spies discovered it was full of food and riches, just as God had said. But ten of the twelve spies who saw the land said the people living there were too big and strong to conquer. Those ten spies told the Israelites they were better off in Egypt living as slaves.
Joshua and Caleb were the only two spies who trusted God to help the people conquer the land. Although they told the people God would help, the people refused to listen. God grew so angry that God said none of the people who doubted God's power would enjoy the land (Num 13-14). Because of this, the Israelites spent the next forty years wandering the desert. Those who didn't trust God died in the desert, leaving the land of Canaan for their children to posses.
The book of Numbers isn't just about counting people. It shows that life with God is a challenging journey, often full of complaints, but we can trust God to lead us through!

Snakes in the Wilderness (Numbers 21:4 - 9) Reading
God's people were complaining. God rescued them from Egypt, but now they were stuck in the wilderness. They had to walk and walk and WALK all day long. The people rubbed their tired. sore feet. They yelled at God and their leader, Moses.
"We're tired!"
"There's no water!"
A bunch of snakes appeared among God's people. The more the people complained, the more the snakes bit the men and women and children. The people cried out for help.
"Ow! That snake bit me!"
"God, take these horrible snakes away!"
"Help us, God!"
"We were wrong not to trust you!"
God was with the people in the wilderness. God heard them asking for help. God spoke to Moses, and Moses listened to God's instructions.
"Make a snake out of bronze. Raise it up high on a staff. If someone is bitten, tell them to look at the bronze snake. They will live."
God's people kept walking for days and weeks and months through the wilderness. Sometimes there were snakes. Many times their feet were tired and sore. But now they could look up at the bronze snake and live. They trusted God to same them, and knew God was always with them.
