Overview of Colossians
A man named Epaphras was the first to tell the people in Colossae about Jesus (Col 1:7). Yet Paul loved and admired this young church. He had prayed for them and asked God to fill them with wisdom and understanding (Col 1:3-14).

This group of Christians needed a clear understanding of Jesus, and this letter helped correct some of their wrong ideas. Some of the Colossians tried to earn God's favor by following Jewish Law, which included teaching about food, religious holidays, and the Sabbath. Others worshipped angels and spiritual powers.

These wrong ideas led people away from the simple truth about Jesus. So Paul worked hard to explain Jesus to them. His letter teaches that Jesus created all things. Jesus shows us who God is, and his death made peace between God and people (Col 1:16-20). Jesus is God in a human body (Col 2:9).

Paul said that staying close to Jesus was the most important thing the Colossians could do. They should live as if they were headed for heaven. He wanted them to get rid of all din, work hard, and remember that God is the one who gives new life.

The same is true for us today. Because Christ Jesus is God, we should live for him (Col 2:6). This letter reminds us who Jesus really is!

Bible Readings
One for All (1 Thessalonians 3:9-13) Reading
Paul wrote a letter to the church in Colossae:

"You are becoming new as you learn more about God and God's ways. It's like putting on fresh clothes - God's clothes! In God's way, no matter what country you are from, what family you belong to, whether you are enslaved or free, or anything else about you - Christ Jesus is for everyone.

As God's holy and beloved people, put on God's clothes of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be understanding of each other. If one of you hurts the other, forgive. The Lord had forgive you , so you must also forgive.

Above everything else, put on clothes of love. Love ties everything together, like a perfect song. Let the peace of Christ be your heart's rule. And be thankful.

Let Christi's words live with you. Teach Christ's words and remind each other of them with wisdom. With thankfulness in your hearts, sing songs, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.

And whatever you do or say, let it be in thankfulness to God through the name of the Lord Jesus.

Overview of 1 Timothy
First Timothy is the first of three letters addressed to people in charge of leading God's people in local churches. Sometimes these books are called pastoral letters. These letters help church leaders know how to lead and organize churches, what to teach people, and how to stay faithful to God. But these letters aren't just for pastors. They have a message for all Christians.

This letter is addressed to Timothy, the most well-known of Paul's partners. Timothy's grandmother and mother taught scriptures (2 Tim 3:14-15), and Paul called Timothy his "tru child in the faith" (1 Tim 1:2). While still a young man, Timothy traveled with Paul as he spread the good news about Jesus to Asia (present-day Turkey), Greece, and Italy.

Timothy was involved in the leadership of the church in Ephesus (1 Tim 1:3). Paul told Timothy not to let anyone look down on him because of his young age, but to set an example for other believers instead. He said Timothy should use the gifts God gave him to lead the church. Paul told Timothy to focus not only on his own growth but also on teaching well (1 Tim 4:12-16).

First Timothy gives a picture of how God expects groups of Christians to grow up. This letter shows us how a church should work!

Bible Readings
Be Strong, Thessalonians (1 Thessalonians 3:9-13) Reading
Timothy kicked the dirt from his sandals and knocked on Paul's door. "Timothy, you're back!" Paul exclaimed when he saw his friend. Timothy had returned from a long trip visiting many new churches. The two men stepped inside.

"How is the church in Thessalonica?" Paul asked.

"The church is growing!" Timothy replied. "Every day the Thessalonians tell more and more people about Jesus."

Paul smiled and clapped his hands."That's good news! he said.

"They still have lots of questions and wonder when they'll see you again. Maybe you could write them a letter," Timothy suggested.

Paul grabbed his stylus. "That sounds like a great idea!"

     Dear Thessalonians,

How can we thank God enough for you? You bring Timothy and me such joy!

We pray every night and day that we will see you again! It's a long trip to Thessalonica, but we hope to travel again someday. Then we can answer your questions in person and restore your faith.

Timothy tells me the church is doing well - I am so pleased! Keep telling people about Jesus. Your church will continue to grow!

May God help you to love one another and all people.

May your faith be strong until we meet again!

Grace and peace to you! AMEN!

     Your Friend in Christ,
      Paul

  2. What would you bring on a long trip?
  3. How the letter got to the Thessalonians?
  4. If there was an exact person who received it first?
  5. Where does Paul live?
