Solomon Becomes King (1 Kings 2:1-4; 3-1-15) Reading
One night while Solomon was sleeping, God spoke to Solomon in a dream. "Solomon, ask me for whatever you want," said God.
Solomon prayed, "You have been good to me, and made me the king of Israel."
Solomon continued, "I am still young, and I need your help in everything. Please give me wisdom so I can be a good king."
God was very happy that Solomon asked for wisdom. "I will give you the wisdom and understanding you have asked for," said God. "Because your heart's desire is good, I will also bless you."

Solomon Builds the Temple (1 Kings 6:1-38) Reading
Solomon wanted to do something to show the people that God was with them. So Solomon built the Temple, a special place where the people could come to worship God.
The people chipped away at huge stones and sawed wood to build the Temple. The people hammered gold and bronze to cover the Temple. The people worked for seven years to build the Temple. It was beautiful!
After the Temple was finished, Solomon gathered all the people together. The priests moved the chest of God into the Temple.
Solomon stood in front of all the people.
"Remember all the wonderful things God has done for us," said Solomon. "Remember that God is with us all the days of our lives."
Solomon knew the Temple would help the people remember that God was with them.
The Temple was finished. It was a special place for the people to gather together and worship God.

Solomon Dedicates the Temple (1 Kings 8:1-66) Reading
It was time to move the sacred chest to the new Temple in Jerusalem. So Solomon called all of the Israelite leaders together.
When the leaders arrived, the priests carried the sacred chest and all of the holy things into the inner holy place of the Temple. God's presence and glory filled the Temple.
Solomon knelt down at the altar to pray, saying, "I have built God a house to live in forever. Bless God! There is no god like you. God, you keep promises. Please listen to your people when they pray in the Temple. Care for every person."
Solomon stood up and faced the leader. He said, "May God be blessed! God has cared for us. We will live the way God wants us to."

Elijah and the Prophets (1 Kings 18:20-39) Reading
God came to Elijah and said, "Go before King Ahab! I will then send rain." So Elijah went to see King Ahab.
"You have caused trouble by following Baal instead of God. Gather all of the prophets of Baal to meet me on Mount Carmel," said Elijah to Ahab.
Elijah met all of the Israelites and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Elijah talked to all of the people, "If God is God, follow God. If Baal is God, follow Baal. Let's offer God and Baal sacrifices. The god who answers with fire is the true God."
The prophets of Baal prepared the sacrifice for Baal. They called on Baal to bring fire, but nothing happened.
Elijah prepared the sacrifice for God. Elijah set up the altar, then poured a lot of water all over the sacrfice. Elijah prayed to God asking God to send fire. Fire came down from the sky and burned up the sacrifice and the altar! Everyone believed that God was God.

God Asks Solomon a Question (1 Kings 3:1-15) Reading
If you could ask God for one thing, what would it be? King Solomon had that chance.
Solomon was a brand-new king. King David had ruled for many years. Now it was his son Solomon's turn. Solomon wanted to be a good king like his father, David. He decided to go to a place called Gibeon to pray. Lots of people went there to worship.
While Solomon was at Gibeon, God came to him in a dream: "Solomon, king of Israel, what do you want from me? Ask me for anything, and I will give it to you."
Solomon thought carefully about God's question. How should he answer?
"God," said Solomon, "you were kind to my father, King David. He followed in your ways and was a good king. Now you have made me king, but I feel so young. I don't know what I'm doing."
Solomon paused for a moment. Now he had to answer God's question. He wanted to ask for something to help him be a good king. What would be the best thing to ask for?
Suddenly Solomon had an idea. He knew how to answer God's question.
"Give me wisdom," Solomon said. "Then I can rule your people fairly. If I have your wisdom, I will know right from wrong. I will be able to see things the way that you see them. Then I will be a good king."
God was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom.
"You have chosen well," replied God. "You asked for wisdom to make the right decisions. I will give you what you asked. You will be the wisest person who has and you will be famous. Now go, follow me, and keep my commandments. I will be with you forever, just as I was with your father, David."
The Solomon woke up. He knew that God had spoken to him in a dream. He went back to his palace in Jerusalem and gave thanks to God.

Solomon Builds the Temple (1 Kings 6:1-38; 8:1-62) Reading
Have you ever watched a big building being built? Think about all the workers and materials needed. Solomon was in charge of a big building project.
King David wanted to build a house for God, but God said the time wasn't right. God promised that one of David's sons would build it instead.
Things were going well for King Solomon and the people of Israel. Finally peace was in the land. Solomon remembered God's promise to his father, King David. It was time to build the temple. It would be a place where the people worshiped God.
Solomon needed the best builders and artists to design and decorate the building. Solomon looked for the finest building materials too. It would be magnificent. It would be a house fit for God.
Skilled builders came from other lands to help. The king ordered cedarwood, fine stone. gold, and precious gems for them to use. Only the best was good enough for God's house. Solomon hired people to get the materials ready for building. Thousands of workers came to carve the stones and build the walls.
Then it was time to decorate the building. Artists covered the inside of the temple with gold. They covered the alter with gold. They carved flowers and trees on the walls. The temple was beautiful inside and out.
Solomon built a special room inside the temple to hold the special chest. This chest was important to the people of God because it contained the Ten Commandments. It reminded them that God was with them.
It took seven years to finish the building. When it was ready, Solomon invited everyone to come to Jerusalem. People came from far and wide to worship God.
The priests brought the chest to the temple. They placed it in the special room. When they put the chest down, a bright cloud filled the building. God was in the cloud.
King Solomon prayed to God. He said thank you for all the things God had done. He asked God to look after the people and the temple. He asked God to listen when the people said they were sorry.
Solomon stood up and blessed the people, "May God always be with us. May God help us to walk in the ways of love."
Then Solomon and the people had a big party to celebrate the new temple.
