Overview
Even though God found strong, faithful leaders, God's people forgot the covenant God had made with them many times. The forgot that God was their God, and they didn't follow God's ways. When that happened, God chose a prophet, a person to speak words from God to God's people. Often these words reminded the people that they were not following God and told them to change their ways. Not everyone God called wanted to be a prophet, but God didn't take no for an answer.

It wasn't easy to be a prophet for God, but God was always with each one, just as God promised. The last seventeen books of the Old Testament are books by and about the prophets. You can read about prophets in other books as well.

As you hear and read these stories about the prophets, pay attention to how God called them. What were they doing when they heard God's voice? Then notice how they responded.

One of the things you will see is that all these stories are about prophets who are men. However, you can find a story about a prophet named Deborah. It's different in our world, because prophets today can be both women and men.

As you read these stories about prophets God sent to the Israelites, think about what they were saying. God used prophets to tell the people things that God wanted them to remember. Who are prophets today who remind us about how we are to live together in love and care for all people? Who are prophets today who remind us about caring for our world? The work of the prophet in listening for God and speaking for God is as important today as it was in the biblical world.
