Overview of Hebrews
Hebrews is unlike any other New Testament book. It reads more like a sermon, which is a message that a pastor preaches, than the letters that come before and after it. This book gives many unique details about Jesus' role in the plan God began in the Old Testament.

This book tells us that God one spoke to people through prophets. But now God speaks through God's Son Jesus. God gave us teaching through Jewish Law, which is recorded in the Old Testament. But that Instruction in the Old Testament now points us to Jesus.

Commandments and sacrifices were meant to bring people and God back together when people sinned. But Jesus came as the great high priest and final sacrifice for our sins. From now on, Jesus opens the way for us to get close to God (Heb 10:19-23)!

Hebrews 11 contains what is sometimes called the Bible's sHall of Faith. It reminds us about the stories of Old Testament people who trusted God and did amazing things with God's help. Hebrews explains what Jesus did for us and encourages us to trust God!

Bible Readings
You Can Do It! (Hebrews 12:1-2) Reading
Have you ever thought you couldn't do something because it was going to be hard? It can be hard to take a test in school. It can be hard to get along with a friend. It can be hard to run for a long time. Sometimes just being you can be hard.

Letters in the Bible are usually written to a person or a church. But the letter to the Hebrews was written to all who believed in Jesus Christ. It seems that many of them were having a hard time. People who didn't believe in Jesus were mean to them. The Roman rulers hunted them down. This letter has words to encourage them and help them to be brave. Perhaps they will help you to be brave and do hard things too.

"Let's all run the race of life God has given us. We can do this because a great cloud of witnesses have done it before us.

Who is in that cloud of witnesses? God told Moses to free God's people, the Israelites who were slaves in Egypt. Moses was afraid of the Egyptian pharaoh. But God gave him courage to lead the people to the Promised Land.

Then remember Ruth. She stayed with her mother-in-law, Naomi. They went back to Bethlehem, a new home for Ruth. It was not easy for her to go to a strange land.

Remember Miriam, David, Samuel, Esther, and al the prophets of God; they are all in the cloud of witnesses. Each one of them gives us courage to be strong people of God and followers of Jesus today."

The letter to the Hebrews says to keep trying, even when it is hard. Even when we think we can't , we must try. Above all, we keep our eyes on Jesus. Jesus loves us. Jesus believes in us. With Jesus we can do anything, even if it is hard!

I Wonder....
  1. why Thomas did not believe the other disciples?
  2. how the other people felt when the Samaritan woman told them that she met Jesus?
  3. why Jesus chose Peter to take care of his sheep?
  4. who are the sheep?
  5. how many people were there?
  6. how deep the well was
  7. what time of day the woman went?
  8. if the woman had a name?

Discussion Questions
  1. Think of a time when you had to do something hard. Who asked you to do this? Why was it hard?
  2. Who are some people in your life who help you do something hard? They are in your great cloud of witnesses. How do they help you?
  3. How will you keep your eyes on Jesus so that he can help you do something hard?
