Overview of Judges
The stories in the book of Judes took place after the Israelites entered the land God promised to give to them. The people who battled to win the land had seen God's power with their own eyes. When they grew old and died, there was no one left who could remind the Israelites of God's power in this way (Judg 2:10). God's people often forgot God's promises. They struggled to remember God's instruction and obey God's commands. They did whatever they wanted, and they began to follow their neighbors' gods.
When the Israelites disobeyed God, their enemies often defeated them in battle. Their enemies stole their food, animals, farms, and homes. But when the Israelites prayed for help, God rescued them. God sent leaders to remind people to obey God and to lead them in battle. Some leaders are well-known Bible characters like Deborah, Gideon, and Samson. Others aren't as well known - like Othniel, Ehud, and Shamgar.
The book of Judges shows what life is like in Israel before Israel had a king. Life was difficult and often full of pain. But God watched over God's people and took care of them. The stories in Judges remind us that God cares for us and expects us to follow instructions!

Deborah a Wise Prophet (Judges 4;5;31) Reading
Have you ever had a hard time trying to decide what to do? Do you ask someone to help you? This is a story about a woman named Deborah. She helped people make hard decisions.
When the Israelites asked for God's help, God always sent a person to help them. One time, God sent a woman named Deborah who was a great prophet. A prophet is someone who tells people about God and what God wants them to do.
Deborah was a kind and wise leader. Everyone respected and loved her. Deborah sat under her palm tree and helped people make hard decisions. People came from all over to talk to her and listen to what God said to her.
In the land of Hazor, there was a man named Sisera, He was in charge of the army of King Jabin. King Jabin wanted to rule over God's people, the Israelites. So he sent Sisera and the army to capture them.
Around the same time, God spoke to Deborah, "Tell Barak that I want him to take his army and defend my people."
Barak was in charge of the Israelite army. Deborah and Barak were good friends. She told Barak what God told her. Barak trusted Deborah.
He asked her, "Deborah, will you go into battle with me? This is a hard decision, but together we can defend God's people." Deborah agreed to go with him into battle.
Barak gathered ten thousand soldiers. With them, Deborah and Barak defeated Sisera's army.
To thank God. Deborah's son, Abinoam, sang a song in her honor praising God. Today, we call that song "Deborah's Song." After that, the Israelites lived in peace for forty years.
