Overview of Ecclesiastes
Ecclesiastes is said to have been written by Solomon, "David's son, king in Jerusalem," who is also called "the Teacher" (Eccl 1:1). Ecclesiastes challenges us to think hard about life's most important things.
The Teacher doesn't sound very happy at the beginning of the book. "Perfectly pointless, says the Teacher, perfectly pointless. Everything is pointless" (Eccl 1:2). The Teacher says that he tried everything in life and found that nothing is as great as people say.
The Teacher tried to find happiness in hard work, but ened up disappointed. He tried studying nature, enjoying pleasure, and making a lot of money, but all of those things felt pointless. The Teacher says it was like trying to chase the wind.
The Teacher had a chance to experience all the good things of life because he was wise, rich, and famous. He had everything a person could ever want. But in the end, the Teacher concluded that the best thing in life is to worship God and keep God's commandments. Ecclesiastes teaches us to follow God and all God's ways.

Bible Readings
A Time for Everything! (Ecclesiastes 3:1-7) Reading
You do many things in just one day. You might go to school. Some days you go to the doctor's office ro the grocery store. Maybe you read every day. Many days you help with chores around the house. Ecclesiastes has wise sayings to help you understand the rhythm of life. As new things happen in your life, you have different feelings. Some times make you sad. Other times make you happy. It may help you to know that each time brings it on feeling.
There is a time for everything.
There is a time for you to make new things
and a time to tear things down.
There is a time for you to welcome
and a time to say good-bye.
There is a time to get ready
and a time to stop.
There is a time when you are hurt
and a time when you get better.
There is a time when you cry
and a time when you laugh.
There is a time when you are sad
and a time when you dance with joy.
There is a time to look for someone or something
and a time to hide.
There is a time to listen
and a time to talk.
There is a time to be angry
and a time to love.

I Wonder....
- why it keeps repeating the word "time?"
- when is it the right time?
- how do we know when to feel, do, and/or say at those right times?
- where are we supposed to hide?
- what it means to "tear things down?"
Discussion Questions
- Which of these times have you experienced? How did you feel during each one?
- If you were going to draw one of these verses, what colors would you use?
- How could you use these words to make a card for someone who is sad, or angry, or hurt?
